  • Activist: 15 ISIS Members Killed in Airstrike on Syrian Jail

US-led coalition air strikes killed almost 60 people at a Syrian prison run by the Islamic State group, a monitor said Tuesday, as Washington insisted the jihadists remain its only target.

The airstrike targeted the prison in the city of Mayadeen in the countryside of Syria's eastern province of Deir al-Zour on Monday, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

"The removal of these facilities disrupts ISIS's ability to facilitate and provoke terrorist attacks against the coalition, our partner forces and in our homelands", Colonel Joe Scrocca, coalition director of public affairs, said in an email to Reuters news agency.

The Syrian Observatory, a UK-based group that monitors the country's six-year civil war through a network of sources on the ground, said the prison was hit at dawn on Monday by what were believed to have been coalition aircraft.

A spokesman for the US-led coalition said they would quickly look into the matter.

Dillon added that Observatory reporting had previously been exaggerated.

"The air raid hit a building in al-Mayadin that was being used as an ISIS prison", it said.

Mayadeen lies in the Euphrates Valley some 45 kilometres (28 miles) southeast of the provincial capital of Deir Ezzor.

Separately, Syrian state-run TV station al-Ikhbariya cited its Deir al-Zor correspondent as saying coalition warplanes had destroyed a building in al-Mayadeen used as a prison by Islamic State to hold a "large number of civilians".

Last month's civilian death count of 427 from US-led coalition air strikes is more than double the previous 30-day toll from April.
