King Felipe then shared a carriage with the Queen for the traditional procession down the Mall while his wife shared a ride with Prince Philip.

Both royal lines are descended from Queen Victoria.

It is the first state visit by a Spanish monarch since King Juan Carlos toured Britain in 1986.

Following protocol the Queen introduced the Spanish couple to leading figures from United Kingdom national life, including Prime Minister Theresa May, Home Secretary Amber Rudd - whose hat blew off when she arrived - Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick and senior military figures.

Last September, Felipe used his address to the UN General Assembly in NY to call for a negotiated handover of The Rock.

The EU annoyed Britain and Gibraltar in April by suggesting Spain has a right of veto over the territory's post-Brexit relationship with the bloc.

The Duke of Edinburgh, who recently spent a short spell in hospital, is due to accompany Felipe as he inspects the Guard of Honour, the 1st Battalion Irish Guards, on the Horse Guards Parade ground. The Royal couple today attended a Royal reception in Westminster, to mark the start of a state visit.

Felipe and Letizia's last stop is in Oxford, where they will visit the Bodleian library, be given a private viewing of Spanish treasures held in Oxford.
