The Celtics have cleared up cap space for the incoming US$128 million Gordon Hayward contract by trading Avery Bradley to the Detroit Pistons. And while Smart is also in the final year of his deal, he'll be a restricted free agent next summer, allowing Boston to control the process and potentially keep down his salary.

Both Dedmon and Crawford are free agents, Boston has one mid-level exception to use and it would make sense to use it on one of them.

Bradley, 26, now is the best player of the three that moved, so that's a plus for the Pistons.

In 76 games, the 23-year-old wing averaged 13.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. Either way, whether you agree with it or not-Bradley is being traded and fans will have to see how it all plays out.

Still, there's a reason Bradley is so coveted. With Bradley gone, that doesn't necessarily mean the Celtics are done making moves. Though he won't be as high of an option in Boston, he may find more room to thrive.

From a positional standpoint, this deal may align the Celtics better.

There's a lot to like about the way the Celtics roster is taking shape. Thomas meanwhile will likely start trying to pass more (can't call Kobe for that) and the Jazz will have to make a decision on whether they should sign-and-trade Hayward or just let him go.

The Miami Heat traded oft-injured forward Josh McRoberts to the Dallas Mavericks for center A.J. Hammons and a 2023 second-round draft pick. Given that limitation, the Celtics did well. The reason for the move is that Boston wanted to take advantage of Bradley's stock rising as he has blossomed to one of the toughest point guards to score on. That's exactly the scenario the Pistons now face.

The Pistons earlier in the week added depth at point guard with the signing of Langston Galloway (three years, $21 million), who can also play off-guard.

Furthermore, securing Avery Bradley at shooting guard (until next year) eliminates Detroit's greatest concern this off-season: resigning Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

The Detroit Pistons won this deal, no doubt. Bradley, in the same 33 minutes that Caldwell-Pope averaged, scored 16.3 points with a 46.3 percent accuracy. He'll nearly certainly take whatever he can get as a restricted free agent.

The Pistons lose Morris, who has been a steady veteran and a mainstay in the starting lineup over the past two seasons.

"It's no secret that Avery had been one of my favorite players", Ainge said. I'm not convinced that's the case.

Morris is a solid 235 pounds, and though he hasn't been known as a rebounder, he averaged 4.6 rebounds last season playing next to Andre Drummond, one of the most dominant rebounders in the National Basketball Association. Bradley began to showcase his potential as an elite defender and he recorded a memorable blocked shot on Dwyane Wade. Caldwell-Pope isn't far off that.

"I don't have the five positions anymore", Celtics coach Brad Stevens said, per Kareem Copeland of the Associated Press.

Stan Van Gundy and Tom Gores did indicate resigning KCP was a main priority, though sides never agreed to terms. It is certainly not enough to put them over the edge to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers, but it's a small step forward.
