After a tense, months long fight, the parents of terminally ill baby Charlie Gard announced Monday they were ending their legal battle to take him to the United States for experimental treatment.

Bertini examined 11-month-old Charlie last week at London's Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital with U.S. neuroscientist Michio Hirano, who, after reviewing the latest scans, said he was no longer prepared to offer the experimental nucleoside treatment, as the baby had irreversible brain and muscle damage.

Charlie, 11 months old, suffers from a rare genetic disorder known as mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome, an often fatal disease that causes progressive muscle weakness.

The little boy's mother Connie Yates was back in court on Tuesday, a day after she and her partner Chris Gard abandoned legal action over treatment for Charlie.

"We struggle with the difficulties the hospital has placed in the way of the parents' wish to have a period of time, probably a relatively short period of time. before the final act in Charlie's short life".

His parents have given up fighting to take him to the U.S. for experimental therapy after British doctors said it wouldn't help.

"It is greatly hoped that in the days ahead, it will be possible to extend to his parents the same quality of care with which Charlie has been provided and to concentrate on the family as a whole" the hospital said in a statement.

Outside court on Monday, Chris Gard said the couple needed to go through their last hours with their child.

James O'Brien thinks Charlie Gard's parents fought like any parent would - but the way some of the public have reacted has some worrying undertones.

Mr Armstrong said representatives for GOSH had not visited the family home. "It must be provided in a specialist setting by specialists", Gollop wrote in a document setting out the hospital's position for the court. He is now on life support. Here, as throughout the case, there remain two aspects to be balanced: Charlie's best interests and his parents' needs.

He accused London's Great Ormond Street Hospital, where Charlie is being treated, of putting obstacles in the way. Conservatives are using Charlie's case to imply that universal health care and government-run programs are bad for disabled children.

Connie Yates was in the London High Court for a hearing before Judge Nicholas Francis. When asked about the possibility of moving Charlie to a hospice he told the judge that was "the next best option" for the family.

Now Charlie's parents seem to believe that if he had just received this experimental treatment sooner, Charlie would have had a chance. Britain's courts, backed by the European Court of Human Rights, refused permission, saying it would prolong his suffering without any realistic prospect of helping the child.

While the couple acknowledged that the therapy would come too late for their son, they were keen to say that they would continue fighting for other ill children who were in need of life-saving treatment.
