A smiling Carter showed up in blue jeans and a work shirt to the site in the St. James neighborhood of Winnipeg, where hundreds of Habitat for Humanity volunteers joined the former president and his wife, Rosalynn, to build 25 homes. Carter was treated for dehydration while volunteering with Habitat for Humanity.

Former first lady Rosalyn Carter accompanied him on the humanitarian trip and was alongside him when he was taken to a Winnipeg hospital for rehydration.

"He and Mrs. Carter extend their appreciation for the many well-wishes he received worldwide", Congileo said in a statement.

"President Carter was dehydrated working in the hot sun".

Carter - the US president from 1977 to 1981 - and Rosalynn are longtime supporters of Habitat for Humanity and are helping the not-for-profit organization with a blitz build of 25 homes in the city.

According to Habitat for Humanity, the prominent nonagenarian had come to Canada with his wife planning to build 150 homes across the country.

Friday is the last day of the annual Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project in Canada.

Mr Carter was diagnosed with melanoma that had spread to his brain in 2015 but announced in March the following year that he no longer needed treatment.

The 92-year-old was in Canada helping build a Habitat for Humanity home when he "collapsed", a volunteer told CBC News, triggering a rush of paramedics and firefighters to assist him.
