The supervising physicians of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo, who died of liver cancer at a Chinese hospital while still under police custody, said on Friday that they did everything they could to save his life.

Liu died from multiple organ failure, the authorities said, having not been allowed to leave the country for treatment for late-stage liver cancer as he wished.

Former Amnesty International Norway leader Petter Eide claimed that Prime Minister Erna Solberg reacted with relief when informed of the death of Nobel Peace Prize victor Liu Xiaobo in China.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, Geng Shuang, defended the country on Friday from criticism over Liu's treatment.

House Foreign Affairs subcommittee chairman Chris Smith (R-N.J.) said Beijing is responsible for the recent death of Chinese dissident and human rights activist Liu Xiaobo. The leader of the Norwegian Nobel committee Berit Reiss-Andersen said the Chinese government bore a "heavy responsibility" for Liu's death."The Chinese Government bears a heavy responsibility for his premature death", she said in an emailed statement. On that day the world honoured and celebrated Liu Xiaobo's courage as it does again today.

The statement praises Liu's leading role as a human rights activist and his unremitting efforts for democracy and tolerance in China. Link, who helped Liu translate the charter into English, says Liu told the other authors and signers that he was willing to take the rap for the document.

A prominent Chinese dissident has died of advanced liver cancer despite worldwide efforts to save him.

Chinese writer Liu Xiaobo died Thursday at age 61.

However, Cohen said he feared Beijing's persecution of the dissident's wife, Liu Xia, would continue as it fought to prevent her becoming a symbol of political resistance and freedom of expression. China's state-controlled Global Times said in an editorial that "the West has bestowed upon Liu a halo, which will not linger".

"If Xi does the right thing, we can all commend that action", Cruz said.

The First Hospital of China Medical University said Wednesday on its website that Liu needs a tube to be inserted into his windpipe to give him breathing support.

China condemned the award, put Liu's wife Liu Xia under house arrest, and suspended bilateral relations with Norway in response.

Articles mentioning Liu's death, with titles like "The Death of Freedom", were quickly expunged, but artists and curators have instead posted screenshots of the error message, with comments like, "Do you not understand what bullshit this is!"

"We are really, really sad and really angry at the Chinese government", memorial organiser Mike Zhong told SBS World News. He is the first Nobel Peace Prize victor to die in state custody since 1938, when German pacifist Carl von Ossietzky died after years in Nazi Germany's concentration camps. It was a courageous fight that Liu fought.

"I also wish to express my deepest condolences to his family, particularly Ms. Liu Xia who is now still under house arrest".

Recalling the times he met Liu in person in 2006 and 2008, Aso said the lifelong activist was a noble yet friendly and open person.

Mr Liu won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010 for his "long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China", but he was not permitted to travel to Norway to accept it.

That "accordance with the law" has been questioned by governments, rights groups, lawyers and activists.

"In 'No Enemies, No Hared, ' he once said 'I firmly believe that China's political progress will never stop, and I'm full of optimistic expectations of freedom coming to China in the future, because no force can block the human desire for freedom".
