Kelly, 67, one of the nation's longest-serving commanders, came into Donald Trump's orbit because of positions on terrorism and immigration that mirrored the president's.

Congressman Peter King who accompanied Trump aboard Air Force One to NY and back, told reporters that during the flight, he saw no indication of Priebus' exit.

But in ousting White House chief of staff Reince Priebus days after spokesman Sean Spicer was forced out, it seems that Trump is abandoning the Republican Party as well.

"He is a Great American and a Great Leader", Trump said.

After it was announced that Priebus would be leaving, a friend of the Homeland Security secretary told the Washington Post that Kelly, a tough talking Bostoner who spent 45 years in the Marines, is ideally suited to confront the challenges he'll face. "The president needs someone who understands the Trump constituency as his chief of staff, someone who has both administrative skills and political savvy", Roger Stone, Trump's off-and-on adviser, said, anticipating Kelly's selection before the announcement was made.

On Friday afternoon, during a speech in Long Island, N.Y., Trump gave what now seem like foreshadowing remarks.

The move likely signals a greater focus on law and order issues and will put further strain on relations between Trump and the Republican establishment.

Scaramucci was appointed director of the White House Office of Public Liaison and Intergovernmental Affairs in January, sparking internal administration feuding linked to Priebus, the former RNC chairman, during his Office of Government Ethics vetting process. "Reince is doing a fantastic job at the White House, and I believe he has the president's confidence".

"The president has the right to hit the reset button and I support him", Preibus told CNN. President Donald Trump announced the staff shakeup in a Friday tweet.

Kelly, a four star general was tapped to replace Reince Priebus, who was forced out last week following a tumultous week of changes for the White House. "I congratulate Secretary Kelly on his appointment, and look forward to working with him to advance our agenda".

The Post cites two sources in reporting that Trump first offered the job to Kelly in mid-May, but kept on Priebus when Kelly declined.

On Wednesday, Scaramucci went on an expletive-laden rant to a reporter in which he called Priebus a "paranoid schizophrenic, a paranoiac".

In the CNN interview, Priebus refused to respond to Scaramucci's vulgar comments about him or his allegations that he was a leaker.

Scaramucci made clear when he was hired that he reported not to Priebus but directly to the president and by Wednesday night was publicly suggesting that the chief of staff was a leaker and even threatened to seek an FBI investigation. "I resigned and he accepted", he told Wolf Blitzer.

You've heard the old saw - don't do more than one of changing house, job or partner at the same time. Kelly, who has demonstrated strong leadership at the Department of Homeland Security, had become a favorite of Trump's.
