Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho may still get that fourth new player he covets this summer transfer window.

Manchester United have reportedly launched a €40million (£36m) bid to try and land Barcelona star Sergi Roberto.

The Catalan club are adamant that Sergi Roberto will not be sold this summer, rebuffing United's first offer as they look to keep their squad together following Neymar's move to PSG.

The former Atletico Bilbao boss is most likely to use new recruit Nelson Semedo in the full-back position, and even if Roberto is shifted to his favoured midfield position, he will have to fight with Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, and Andres Gomes for a place in the starting lineup.

Nevertheless, Sergi Roberto's preference would be to prove his worth to Valverde and stay at Barca, with the club ready to end United and Chelsea's interest once and for all by offering him a new deal.

United are willing to satisfy Roberto's £36 million release clause, but Chelsea and Monaco have been linked with a move for the Spaniard as well.

The 25-year-old started out as a defensive midfielder but he's developed in to a top right-back and he made 47 appearances in all competitions in that role last season.

Manchester United are firmly chasing the midfielder, who can also operate at right-back, and according to Mundo Deportivo they recently tabled a £36m offer for Roberto which Barca have rejected.

The Spain international's current contract at the Camp Nou runs out in 2019.
