  • CIA chief says'nothing imminent in US-North Korea standoff

"Tensions between North Korea and the United States have racheted up in recent weeks".

And Pompeo said he fully expected Kim to continue to oversee missile tests and seek to advance the North Korean nuclear program in an effort to shore up the country's ability to strike the mainland United States with a nuclear weapon.

But he stressed the U.S. is pursuing "a very determined diplomatic effort" led by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson that is coupled with new financial sanctions to dissuade North Korean leader Kim Jong Un from further provocations.

"If he utters one threat in the form of an overt threat. or if he does anything with respect to Guam, or any place else that is an American territory or an America ally, he will truly regret it and he will regret it fast", Trump said while on his 17-day working vacation in New Jersey.

Pompeo said "there's nothing imminent today", in response to a question about how anxious should people be over the escalating tensions.

This statement was not dissimilar to his remarks earlier in the week following threats from North Korea that the county was preparing a plan to strike the United States territory of Guam.

The White House said in a statement that Trump and Xi "agreed North Korea must stop its provocative and escalatory behavior".

Clapper's assessment came as CIA Director Mike Pompeo reiterated Sunday that the Trump administration's goal was to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula.

He said the USA intelligence community has "a pretty good idea" about what's going on in North Korea.

But he rejected talk of the US being on the "cusp of nuclear war". In response, North Korea announced a detailed plan to fire ballistic missiles towards Guam, a USA territory in the Pacific.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., welcomed Trump's pugnacious approach, arguing that numerous president's critics failed to stop North Korea from developing a nuclear weapon that could hit the United States. "All those smart people who are criticizing his rhetoric and his policy, how well did you do?"

"Each time they test another missile, or if they should conduct a nuclear weapons test, they develop expertise".
