Dolly Parton to the late Glen Campbell: 'I will always love you'

  • 'Wichita Lineman' Campbell nears the end of the line

It takes a prepared person to go a place, and Glen was prepared. "Much love and prayers for you all".

Campbell, the youngest of the late singer's eight children, is a singer herself. A college friend, I realized, also liked those songs. "Love and peace to his family", with the hashtag #endalz.

And these covers aren't just good - they're bloody great. And then I heard the sad news about his diagnosis with Alzheimer's Disease about the time former UT Lady Vols basketball coach Pat Summitt was also diagnosed.

The Arkansas native was born Glen Travis Campbell on April 22, 1936 in Billstown (Pike County) but considered nearby Delight his hometown.

Campbell was an anomaly, a musician whose technical and emotional approach never felt compromised or false. "I thought it was my autobiography set to song", he wrote in his autobiography of the same name, "Rhinestone Cowboy". His 2008 album, Meet Glen Campbell, featured songs from rock bands U2, the Velvet Underground, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Green Day and Foo Fighters.

Interpretation was one of Campbell's key gifts. Between 1964 and 1965, Campbell toured with the Beach Boys as a temporary replacement for Brian Wilson, who had briefly retired after suffering from panic attacks. A great loss. A complete talent. He could do it all.

Campbell would always refer to providing back-up for Frank Sinatra in the midst of his heyday as one of his greatest career highlights.

Campbell's death was met with an outpouring of grief from stars of the country music world and others. He had a look of amazement on his face and said, 'Really?Wow.' He was genuinely surprised.

Ashley had been a family caregiver for her father.

"One of our heroes is gone". She also shared her story about life with Glen and life as a caregiver during a visit to Knoxville in September 2016. We'll do the remembering now Glen. His struggle against his own mind is clearly evident in the clip as he stands at the mic, bantering with the audience as he struggles to recall the familiar opening lines to the song he turned into a career hit in 1967 and performed thousands of times over his career. Campbell "would get out talk to people, shake hands with them, rub the kids' heads". He was a versatile entertainer, session player and loving father. "Thankful to have known him". "I don't know what is."Glen Campbell, we're all gonna miss you".

The real highlight came when Campbell sang his signature song, "Gentle On My Mind", written by John Hartford.

"Rhinestone Cowboy" Glen Campbell, who succumbed on Tuesday to the Alzheimer's he had been diagnosed with in 2011, showed "True Grit" too in his life.

"The world lost a little sparkle today".

In a lot of the headlines you read, he's called a country music star, but this was an artist whose star shone in more directions than one.
