European Union adds three Russian citizens, three companies to sanctions list

Siemens had created a task force team in early July to investigate reports about the alleged transfer of turbines produced by Siemens Gas Turbines Technologies, a joint venture with the Russian Power Machines company, to the Crimean peninsula.

European Union has expanded blacklist under one of its three sets of sanctions over Russia's encroachments against Ukraine. It said Topor-Gilka led negotiations with Siemens to acquire the gas turbines that eventually were illegally diverted to Crimea.

The EU blacklisted on Friday three more Russian-linked people including the deputy energy minister and three companies involved in diverting gas turbines sold by German firm Siemens to Crimea.

The EU measures involve a freeze on their assets and travel bans.

The EU first introduced sanctions on Russian Federation after the 2014 military takeover of the Black Sea peninsula from Kiev, and stepped them up repeatedly as Moscow then backed separatist unrest in the east of Ukraine.

Russian Federation suspends USA embassy use of diplomatic properties in Moscow
Lawmakers want to send the message that President Donald Trump will work with the European Union to dampen Russian aggression. Russian Federation has given the US until September 1 to clear out the diplomatic staff from the property it seized.

The Russian Energy Ministry said in a statement on Saturday that "interference in a dispute between two business entities is a direct violation of worldwide legal norms", adding that imposing a ban against Russian Deputy Energy Minister Andrei Cherezov over the issue of turbines was politically motivated and illegal.

The Commission said the move contributed to the establishment of an independent power supply for Crimea and Sevastopol, which "supports their separation from Ukraine, and undermines the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine".

The Russian Energy Ministry said Saturday that it is legally groundless for the European Union (EU) to sanction two of its officials over spats around Siemens turbine supply.

Three companies, including Technopromexport, were also targeted by the new sanctions.

On July 28, Moscow announced countermeasures in response to the USA sanctions bill and to the expulsion of 35 Russian diplomatic staff from the United States in late 2016. "In order to use the USA gas it is necessary to construct big gas liquefaction plants in the United States, deliver gas to Europe and then utilize it in power grids", Alessandrello told Sputnik.
