  • Car struck group of soldiers in Paris suburb

French police are searching for a driver who slammed his BMW into a group of soldiers, injuring six of them in an apparent ambush before speeding away, officials said.

Authorities checked video surveillance of the area, near the city hall of Levallois, northwest of Paris, and police fanned out around the French capital and stopped numerous cars as they searched for the attacker.

Of the attack Wednesday morning, officials said the vehicle had been "visibly pre-positioned" and that its driver targeted a dozen soldiers as they left their quarters.

French police shot and arrested the unnamed suspect in a auto during a manhunt north of Paris.

The group of soldiers is part of France's Operation Sentinel, set up in the aftermath of the Charlie Hebdo terror attack in January 2015.

"The vehicle took off after the incident, which took place at about 8:00 a.m.", France's RFI radio reports.

Mr Balkany said he had no doubt that the "disgusting" act was deliberate. "The BMW accelerated very quickly the moment they came out".

Two soldiers were seriously hurt and four others suffered minor injuries. "Shortly after, I saw one of the badly wounded lying in front of the Vigipirate [army patrol] vehicle and another one behind it receiving treatment", he said.

One eyewitness, who gave her name as Zakia, told BFMTV that she was awakened by a "boom" before running to her balcony.

"I heard a loud noise, the sound of scraping metal".

"A police investigation was launched and we are searching for the auto", the local police department said in a statement immediately following the attack.

French government spokesman Christophe Castaner said the Paris prosecutor's office has opened a counterterrorism investigation.

Police have been more cautious about assigning a motive, saying only that the driver appeared to have acted deliberately. Operation Sentinelle guards major Parisian sites from terrorist attacks, such as the recent knife scare at the Eiffel Tower.
