  • Sacking of Google engineer over memo a modern parable

Days after an anti-diversity "manifesto" went viral inside Google and infuriated thousands of its employees, over 60 current and former Google employees are now considering suing the company for sexism and pay disparities against women. Plus, Damore describes his motivations for writing a memo that triggered his departure from the search giant.

The Guardian reported that one female senior manager who recently left the tech company said that men at the same level as her were making "tens of thousands of dollars more than her".

Google's CEO said that the memo about biological differences between men and women was "not OK". Damore's major argument was that women simply weren't cut out to be a success in tech industries. In terms of disclosure, my own views tend to be socially liberal and fiscally conservative.

Google regularly holds town hall meetings but this one is expected to be a little different in light of the recent memo post. One question asks how Google will protect female employees who have been harassed online for criticizing the memo. But he added that "we strongly support the right of Googlers to express themselves, and much of what was in that memo is fair to debate, regardless of whether a vast majority of Googlers disagree with it". Otherwise, Google's workforce is predominately male and white.

Google is now embroiled in controversy over claims of gender discrimination, after an "anti-diversity" letter went viral over the weekend.

Damore, whose memo also accused his company of being biased against conservatives, has used his new-found infamy to defend his case in multiple interviews, including a 45-minute session with right-wing YouTube host Stefan Molyneux. She said change is hard and "often uncomfortable".

The U.S. far right plans to take its dispute with Google to the company's doorsteps, with a nationwide "March on Google" set to take place this month.

Eileen Naughton, Google's human-resources chief, said at the meeting that she was pleased to see employees holding spontaneous support groups after the election. So I believe we need to do better.
