Buried in a long story on CNN Thursday recapping the current state of play in the Russian Federation investigation was a reminder that former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who is largely out of the spotlight at the moment, may not be for long.

Analysts say that Mueller's use of a grand jury shows that he is taking control of the investigation.

President Donald Trump's former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, is revealing a brief advisory role with a firm related to a controversial data analysis company that aided the Trump campaign, The Associated Press has learned. In the U.S., they are normally made up of about 16 to 23 members of the public rather than the usual 12, hence "grand" jury. Special Counsel Robert Mueller has reportedly impaneled a grand jury for his probe.

If Mueller is using a grand jury, said Jens David Ohlin, a vice dean and professor at Cornell Law School and an expert on criminal law, "this suggests the investigation will end with indictments".

Mueller, appointed special counsel in May following the dismissal of Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, has been investigating since May whether members of the Trump team have lied about links to Russians and whether Trump himself tried to obstruct justice.

"Inside the White House, it's not just the potential legal jeopardy that has officials concerned; it's how President Trump might react to news that his and his family's finances are under investigation - and the political and legal consequences that could ensue from a Trump backlash against the news", said The Daily Beast.

"But (they are) also investigating whether there were any improper contacts between the Trump campaign and Russian operatives". It can issue subpoenas for documents, and witnesses who testify are under oath and can be prosecuted for not being truthful.
