JD (U) will not split, but Sharad may meet George's fate

Senior JD (U) leader and Rajya Sabha member Sharad Yadav on his first day of Bihar tour on Thursday revolted against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and accused him of betraying the public mandate by siding with NDA. "The trust of 11 crore people who gave mandate to form the grand alliance government in Bihar was broken", Yadav told reporters at the airport on his first trip to Bihar since the end of the grand alliance.

With shadow boxing escalating between supporters of Yadav and Nitish, the sacked JD (U) general secretary Arun Srivastav, a close confidante of Sharad Yadav, said, "Nitish Kumar did not give any time in raising JD (U)". If he floats a new party or join Lalu, he may be able to save the so-called "secular" image he has carved for himself in the last three years in Upper House. "In the 70 years of history, I can not find an example where two opposition parties have a common manifesto", he said.

"I will visit eight to nine districts during my yatra to take feedback from people".

Srivastava is a confidante of Yadav, who claimed later in the day that state chiefs of at least 14 of the party's total 22 units in the country are in their camp, against Kumar's decision.

Earlier, after Nitish Kumar had walked away from the Grand Alliance, Sharad Yadav had said it was a "betrayal" of the people's mandate.

Apart from Sharad Yadav, two JD-U Rajya Sabha MPs - Ali Anwar Ansari and Virender Kumar - have also voiced their opposition to Nitish Kumar's decision to join hands with the BJP.

Sharad, who is touring Sonepur and will visit Muzaffarpur and Sitamarhi in the next couple of days, would escape any disciplinary action till he does not attack Nitish personally.

"I was one of those who asked the people to vote for the Grand Alliance". The JD-U will instead set him up for a fall; a suspension from the party will mean that Sharad Yadav will be disqualified if he does not follow formal party orders or whips to support the BJP-led government in Parliament.

"I continue to stand for the "Gathbandhan" (Grand Alliance)", he said.

The gloves are off as Sharad Yadav of the Janata Dal (United) began a three-day yatra or tour of Bihar with his sharpest attack yet on party boss Nitish Kumar, created to provoke the Chief Minister into taking action against him. "These people (Nitish Kumar and his group) have no contribution for the party", he said. "All talks of split and action against Yadav are wrong", said party spokesperson Neeraj Kumar. Not a single JD-U legislator was present.
