Pakistani national Dujana was wanted for many attacks on security forces and political workers in south Kashmir.

Officials also blocked internet service in the region to stop activists from using social media to rally support against Indian rule.

Reports of student protests were received from Kulgam, Handwara, Pulwama and Srinagar parts.

Dujana, 27, and another militant were killed on Tuesday in an encounter with security forces at a village in Kashmir's Pulwama district, while the former was allegedly visiting his wife.

He was elevated as the divisional commander after the previous south Kashmir divisional commander, Abdul Rehman alias Abu Qasim, was killed on 29 October, 2015.
