  • Britain's Mo Farah ended his track career with silver in the 5,000 metres at the World Championships on Saturday night

The gold medal went to Muktar Edris of Ethiopia, who broke the hold of Mo Farah on long-distance running, outkicking the Briton over the final 200 metres.

The four-time Olympic champion failed to mount a third defence of the 5000m as Ethiopia's Muktar Edris claimed gold in London on Saturday.

Mo Farah of Great Britain (C) and Cyrus Rutto of Kenya (L) compete in the men's 5,000-meter final at the 16th IAAF World Athletics Championships at the London Stadium on August 12, 2017 in London. In the 5,000m he was untouchable before tonight - winning at the Worlds in 2011, 2013, 2015 and of course at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.

Farah told BBC Sport afterwards: "The 10,000m took a lot more out of me than I realised".

Behind Edris, Farah dug deep to battle back from fourth to second when space opened up on the inside over the last few metres to take silver in 13:33.22.

2004 Olympic 4x100m relay champion Darren Campbell: "There are athletes out there who have won more medals, but the quality of those medals and for Mo to have led an event on his own. wow".

"Tactically, I was trying to cover every move but they had a game-plan".

"When it comes to the debate on the greatest distance runner of all time, I'm tough on this", said Coe, who himself is in the shake-up for the title best middle-distance runner of them all.

"The better man won on the day but I gave it all".

The silver adds to Farah's 10,000m gold medal won here on the opening night of these World Athletics Championships, the only medals won by Great Britain. "I did the Mobot out of respect as well for him". It doesn't quite sink in until you compete here and cross the line - I had a couple of minutes to myself - that this is it. "I got boxed-in early on - it doesn't normally happen - and couldn't get out".
