Russia's moves came a day after the U.S. Senate voted to slap new sanctions on Russian Federation, putting President Donald Trump in a tough position by forcing him to take a hard line against Moscow or veto the legislation and anger his own Republican Party.

Moscow said on Friday that the United States had until September 1 to reduce its diplomatic staff in Russia to 455 people, matching the number of Russian diplomats left in the United States after Washington expelled 35 Russians in December.

Olson said Ambassador John Tefft "expressed his strong disappointment and protest" with the move and passed the Russian government's notification to Washington for review. US President Donald Trump will now have to decide whether to accept or veto the measures.

Trump is forced to either take a hard line with the Russians or meet with anger from his own Republican Party by vetoing the sanctions, suggests CNBC.

Russian officials said the Kremlin will not impose sanctions against America until Trump signs the bill. "We stand for worldwide law, for the fair, consistent finding of necessary solutions to world problems, which can be found only together", Ryabkov said.

If Trump chooses to veto it, the bill is expected to garner enough support in both chambers to override his veto and pass it into law.

In December, President Barack Obama expelled 35 Russian diplomats and seized two estates, one on Long Island, in NY, the other on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, in response to Russia's meddling in the United States presidential election.

Lawmakers want to send the message that President Donald Trump will work with the European Union to dampen Russian aggression.

U.S. Embassy was ordered to reduce its diplomats in response to sanctions just passed by Congress.

"Following very productive discussions with Leader McCarthy, I am glad to announce that we have reached an agreement that will allow us to send sanctions legislation to the president's desk", said Senator Bob Corker (R-TN), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, in a statement on the evening of July 26, referring to House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

Ryabkov confirmed that the seizing of the properties was in response to the bill, but declined to say what other measures Russian Federation is willing to take if the United States continues to apply pressure.

The retaliation comes just a day after the U.S. Senate passed sanctions against Russian Federation in a 98-2 vote. "It is a great pity that Russian-American relations are being sacrificed to this domestic, internal American issue", he said at a news conference in Savonlinna, Finland.

It said Russian Federation has done its "utmost" to normalize bilateral relations and develop cooperation with the USA on the important issues.

Russian Federation has given the US until September 1 to clear out the diplomatic staff from the property it seized. Behind the sanctions is the antipathy to Donald Trump and that is no laughing matter. CNN International reported this news.
