  • NASA just recorded the International Space Station flying in front of the solar eclipse

Fifteen states were included the path of totality - stretching from OR to SC - marking it the first coast to coast solar eclipse of the continental United States in 99 years. The moon's shadow crossed the United States at an angle from OR to SC, and day turned to night for a fleeting two minutes and 40 seconds at the point of greatest eclipse; the towns closest to that location was Cerulean and Hopkinsville, Ky. and Carbondale, Ill.

People have been making preparations for years to travel hundreds of miles to see the 2017 total solar eclipse.

■ If you are holding out for the next total solar eclipse visible in Batavia, we wish you good luck and good health. A video submitted to WHSV by Patrick Flanagan, showing a timelapse of the eclipse over Silver Lake, can also be watched above.

Julianne Sweeney could not contain her excitement as sheer peered at Monday's solar eclipse through one of the telescopes outside the Integrated Science Center at SUNY Geneseo. The rest of the nation, including here in central Virginia, saw it as a partial eclipse and it basically took over the news all around the country for the whole day. Fix's parents traveled from Wisconsin to watch the eclipse with their son. But once you put on the glasses, you could see the moon covered about a quarter of the sun.

Millions of onlookers were in awe Monday morning as the shadow of the moon passed over the contiguous United States during a rare total solar eclipse. "There was such a huge amount of interest in this eclipse, you couldn't help but get into it".

Wanda Spruill of Leicester recalled watching the 1979 eclipse through a pinhole projector. "When people said worldwide, or from everywhere, everyone rolled their eyes at us", said Wilcox.

Amazon is already heating up Charlotte's grocery competition
He cited a recent survey in which 70 percent of consumers who don't shop at Whole Foods blamed pricing as the primary reason. Coleen Knight of Guilderland said she was "pleasantly surprised" by the price cuts at the store on Monday.

"It just looks really cool", she said. Fix was able to view the eclipse during his lunch break. Even the President took a few minutes to don a pair of eclipse glasses.

"There is nothing beyond hope, nothing that can be sworn impossible, nothing wonderful, since Zeus, father of the Olympians, made night from mid-day, hiding the light of the shining Sun, and sore fear came upon men", wrote the Greek poet Archilochus of the April 6, 647 B.C. eclipse.

If the weather or your schedule marred a glimpse at Monday's solar eclipse, take heart. "I've never experienced anything like it". "My husband and I wanted to do something different with the kids rather than simply looking at the eclipse with glasses". And you may not want to miss that one because the next total eclipse coming to Canada after 2024 is expected to take place in 2055.

Totality seemed like it lasted less than a minute instead of two and a half, but as soon as a sliver of the sun emerged on the other side of the moon, things went back to normal.

A five-year-old watching the Batavia's 2024 eclipse will be a sprightly 125 when it happens again - October 26, 2144. Start planning for April, 2024 with line of totality in Ontario along the north shore of Lake Erie.
