The Bernstein Brief: QB Battle Out Of Bears' Control

12 August, 2017, 00:28 | Author: Greg Wolfe
  • Big test ahead for Broncos QBs in preseason opener at Chicago

The two quarterbacks' performances may not amount to much more than preseason buzz, but the night presented an interesting dynamic after the Bears signed Glennon to a three-year, $45 million deal and later traded up to select Trubisky with the No. 2 overall pick. As to where Trubisky was going up against reserves, some of whom might not make the Broncos' 53-man roster, Glennon was taking on one of the top defenses in the NFL.

After Mike Glennon struggled (more on that in a bit) and a brief, inconspicuous interlude from Mark Sanchez, Mitch Trubisky took over at the second quarter two-minute warning with the ball at midfield...and promptly marched the Bears into the end zone, completing all four of his passes.

Ditka thinks the decision is obvious and says Trubisky made a better first impression than guys like Tom Brady and Fran Tarkenton.

Either way, this Chicago Bears quarterback situation is off to one hell of a start here in the first week of preseason action. The Broncos do have a very strong defense led\ by sack machine Von Miller, which once again will help keep them in nearly any football game. After spoon-feeding him short throws to get his confidence up the Bears let him play more.

But it was also clear at times he had no idea what he was doing and was reacting rather than quarterbacking, and Bears fans will just have to find a way to remember that patience is most often a virtue.

After the first preseason game, the Chicago Bears quarterback controversy is picking up steam as rookie Mitch Trubisky shined while Mike Glennon flopped.

Trubisky, the Bears prized first round pick, had an impressive National Football League debut, completing 18 of 25 passes for 166 yards.

On that first drive, Trubisky led the Bears down the field on a six-play 50-yard drive. Sloter responded by throwing a 47-yard bomb to rookie receiver Isaiah McKenzie for a game-tying touchdown. The first ended with a 38-yard Brandon McManus field goal, and on the second, the Broncos were forced to punt after a loss knocked them back out of Chicago's side of the field. Sloter went up against a third-string unit playing prevent defense (blowing coverage in the process). He also completed his first ten passes. I was already a major Trubisky believer before this game. Unlike Siemian, Lynch got slightly better as the night progressed, saving his best drive for last.
