The GOP awakening: Republicans begin the Trump push-back

05 August, 2017, 00:38 | Author: Irene Delgado

I was outraged and fought back, starting with a blog post: I became a poster child for the ACLU on this issue (which affected hundreds of other totally innocent people besides myself), and a regular interviewee on NPR, blasting the unconstitutional and ineffective No Fly List.

Some Republicans no doubt are giving voice to long-held reservations about a man whose election was essentially a hostile takeover of their party. She proceeded to postpone votes in the Energy committee she chairs on a group of administration nominees, while saying it was for unrelated reasons, and voted "no" on the health bill. That the vote did not hurt me politically is immaterial.

I've been sympathetic to this impulse to denial, as one doesn't ever want to believe that the government of the United States has been made dysfunctional at the highest levels, especially by the actions of one's own party.

So was Seth Williams, and so were judges galore, and more than a few members of the Philadelphia delegation to Harrisburg. But the comments aimed at his own party are nevertheless a bit of a shock.

Meanwhile, the president's approval ratings have remained stagnant, with some signs of gradual deterioration.

Well, Trump does have his true believers.

Who could blame the people who felt abandoned and ignored by the major parties for reaching in despair for a candidate who offered oversimplified answers to infinitely complex questions and managed to entertain them in the process? In particular, senators were aghast over Trump's recent attacks on their longtime colleague Jeff Sessions, the former Alabama senator who is now attorney general and facing Trump's wrath over having recused himself from the investigation into possible collaboration between Russian Federation and Trump's presidential campaign.

Trump's populist nationalism was always a part of the Republican coalition. "Vigorous partisans, yes, but even more important, principled constitutional conservatives whose primary interest was in governing and making America truly great". Real Clear Politics' polling average for presidential job approval is now at 39/56. Since arriving in Congress in 2001, he has passionately attacked the Cuba embargo as misguided, immoral, and ineffective: "We preach the gospel of contact and commerce and trade and travel, yet with Cuba we turn around and say, 'No, it's not going to work there.' It just seemed to be a glaring inconsistency in our foreign policy". I feel and hear it every day.

"We work for the American people", Sen. In Philadelphia, the result is a city run with its citizens as a secondary consideration to graft. And we got [President George W. Bush's education overhaul law] No Child Left Behind, which was, I thought, big federal overreach into local education policy. But it's probably going to get pretty bad. Trump himself would later admit Obama was born in the U.S.

"If this was our Faustian bargain, then it was not worth it", Flake continues.

Flake did, however, end his piece with a number of suggestions for how Republicans should react to the events of the Trump presidency.

If this pattern persists, with Trump gradually mobilizing a majority of Americans against him and congressional Republicans seeing their 2018 prospects sinking, we could look back and see this week as an inflection point. "So, I very much agree that we are far better off because of migrant labor".

And we should be a little bit humble. He frets that Trump is sullying an already virulent political strain. Even liberals can exchange integrity for ideology. (There are many.) But we conservatives mocked Barack Obama's failure to deliver on his pledge to change the tone in Washington even as we worked to assist with that failure.

These hard, cold numbers take on fresh import when you consider the strong possibility of further unproductive gridlock in Congress, more chaos in the White House, and perhaps a real-world crisis or two.
