United States may buy new Air Force One planes

  • Thanks to a Bankrupt Russian Airline, Trump May Get the Air Force One Deal He Wanted

The planes themselves account for just a fraction of the total cost: Boeing's 747-8 jets carry a list price of $379 million each, but the commercial planes are typically sold for around half the list price.

That modification, done to specifications set by the Air Force, Secret Service and the White House Military Office, is where numerous costs related to the new Air Force One and its backup will come into play. They spoke anonymously because the deal is not final and has not been publicly announced.

Instead they are considering reconfiguring a pair of jumbo Boeing 747-8 planes originally built for a defunct Russian airline that went bankrupt in 2015, according to a USA official and another source close to the discussions.

The US Air Force is considering two new Boeing 747-8s as a replacement for the ageing VC-25 planes that fly the president and other dignitaries.

Defense One was first to report this story.

The U.S. Air Force is in talks to buy two 747-8 jetliners from Boeing that were originally bound for Russia's Transaero Airlines, said a person briefed on the talks.

United States president Donald Trump is hoping to cut costs on his presidential travel.

The person also told us that the move should reduce the cost of the program that will see the commercial jet converted for Presidential use rather than have two planes goal built from scratch.

Boeing also said in a statement that the corporation was determined to offer "the best deal for the Air Force and the best price for the taxpayer." . "Cancel order!" The Air Force had allocated $3.2 billion to invest in new aircraft, per a budget released this past February. While the country's national airline, Aeroflot, absorbed many of Transaero's employees and aircraft, it declined to take on its fleet of costly jumbo jets. According to CNN, Transaero never received the jets, which were tested but have since been moved to an aircraft storage yard in California.

The steep price tag stems from a need to meet security requirements, including secure communications, antimissile defenses and the ability to withstand an electromagnetic pulse in the event of a nuclear explosion. Still, once the Air Force purchases the jets, according to Popular Mechanics, it will be years before the planes are ready for use. This included the four 747-8Is the defunct carrier had on order with Boeing.

The two aircraft that now serve as the primary presidential transports are highly modified 747-200Bs that have been in service since 1990.
