The crowd of protesters and counter protesters was expected to swell up to 6,000 according to CNN.

The demonstration, which took place ahead of the alt-right Unite The Right event in the city's Emancipation Park on Saturday, led to violent exchanges with counter-protesters on the university grounds.

The fighting prompted Charlottesville city manager Maurice Jones and interim county executive Doug Walker to simultaneously declare local states of emergency for the two jurisdictions.

Virginia Secretary of Public Safety Brian Moran said the driver, a man, has been arrested.

"It has no place in America", he added.

Following the clashes, police and security forces were deployed in riot gears. The city sought to block the rally at the park now called Emancipation Park.

They also tweeted that some crowd members were using pepper spray.
