  • R.I.P. Charles Bradley

After undergoing treatment, he was given a clean bill of health and was back on the road earlier this year. Subsequent releases included 2013's Victim Of Love and Changes which came out previous year. He started performing in the '90s under the name Black Velvet as a James Brown impersonator, before catching the attention of Daptone co-founder Gabriel Roth, who began releasing singles by Bradley in 2002.

Bradley, like his Daptone label mate, the late Sharon Jones, was a later-in-life soul music success story.

Bradley was born in Gainesville, Florida, in 1948 and was raised by his grandmother until the age of 8, when his mother brought him to Brooklyn, New York. In 2012 he was the subject of a documentary, Soul of America, which chronicled his hardships and life. Bradley also had a special bond with his audiences.

Charles Bradley was as unlikely a star as there ever was, coming into fame in his 60s thanks to his soulful voice and his exuberant live performances, and now, after a battle with cancer Bradley has passed away at the age of 68. See you on the other side.

"Charles was somehow one of the meekest and strongest people I've ever known".
