  • Step 2 in Equifax's Unfreeze Process

Equifax, one of the three major consumer credit reporting agencies, reported that hackers had gained access to company data that potentially compromised sensitive information for 143 million Americans.

According to Equifax, it discovered the breach on July 29.

Equifax's data breach notification was officially made last week, almost six weeks after the intrusion, which exposed addresses, birth dates and Social Security numbers, was discovered by the company.

While Equifax is free now, Transunion and Experian will cost you at least $5 to put on and to take off. Personally, I trust IDShield (www.CEOIdentity.com). Within two weeks, you will receive a letter with a unique PIN to unlock and relock your credit, he said.

If your information was part of the leak, you'll see the following message: "Thank You - Based on the information you provided, we believe that your personal information may have been impacted by this incident".

You can request a security freeze on your credit report or even place a fraud alert on it. Examine the report to see if there are any erroneous accounts or information and call the credit bureaus and authorities immediately if you notice anything suspicious. A freeze restricts access to your credit report, making it almost impossible for someone to open a new account or line of credit in your name.

Giants' Beckham returns to practice
The 24-year-old catalyst of the Giants' offense said there are still some movements that irk his ankle. It looks like so far they haven't done enough this off-season to give Beckham more support.

Along with questionable response moves, concerns about the nature of the attack and the scope of the Equifax data breach continue to grow. You'll need to enter your last name and the last six digits of your Social.

Check your credit reports with scrutiny.

The Equifax breach could have a ripple effect for years to come, with scams already in the making, so security experts said the best time to let your guard down is never.

If you think the call is really from a legitimate company, offer to call back - but make sure to check for the phone number yourself, either online or in your records. "You can do that by getting the free annual credit reports that you are entitled to from each of the 3 major credit reporting bureaus". She said she could only help me enroll in a credit monitoring service.

Equifax backed down. You can now get credit monitoring without waiving your right to sue.
