Florida isn't the only state preparing for Hurricane Irma.

The order affects the cities of Savannah and Brunswick in Georgia, which has not been hit by a Category 3 hurricane or higher since 1898, according to WSB-TV.

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal issued a mandatory evacuation order on Thursday for the state's coast, including historic Savannah, as deadly Hurricane Irma rolled toward Florida and the southeastern United States.

Cooper added that many North Carolinians still lack a permanent home after being displaced by Hurricane Matthew previous year, and they will need to be cared for. "This state of emergency also ensures aid for the six counties potentially impacted by this catastrophic storm".

Chatham Emergency Management Agency Director Dennis Jones told Savannah Now the agency will begin its enhanced monitoring phase, called OPCON 4, on Wednesday. Students were evacuated Thursday morning, and the campus will be closed Friday, the report added. The order went into effect at 8 a.m. Thursday.

"It is not too soon to get ready", Cooper said.

As Hurricane Irma bears down on the Caribbean and Florida, the governors of both North Carolina and SC have declared states of emergency.

State emergency officials said they don't want people to panic but want those in hurricane-prone areas to be prepared.

"We can't save you once the storm starts", said Scott.
