  • Harry Dean Stanton, Actor and WWII Veteran, Dies at Age 91

Director and actor Samuel West tweeted: "Harry Dean Stanton in PARIS, TEXAS".

John Carpenter, who directed Stanton in Escape from NY, paid tribute to the actor, calling him "a wonderful man".

He played a role in this year's revival of cult classic Twin Peaks.

Harry was born July 14, 1926, in Irvine, Kentucky.

In a career spanning 60 years, he worked with some of Hollywood's most notable directors, such as Frances Ford Coppola on the "The Godfather Part Two" and "One From the Heart", as well as Martin Scorsese, David Lynch and Ridley Scott. I told him I wanted to play something of some beauty or sensitivity.

Stanton appeared as an American soldier in the war comedy Kelly's Heroes in 1970, a gay hitchhiker in Two-Lane Blacktop in 1971 and an outlaw in Dillinger in 1973.

Stanton would encounter breakthrough mainstream success in 1984's Paris, Texas playing a amnesiac named Travis who tries to connect with his brother, played by Dean Stockwell. He began attracting notice in higher-profile movies such as "Aliens", "Private Benjamin" and "Escape From New York", but it was with 1984's "Paris, Texas" that he rose to star status.

"There's nobody like Harry Dean".

Actor Harry Dean Stanton was cast in supporting roles for decades, and his weather-beaten face became a fixture on-screen for more than a half-century.

Stanton amassed almost 200 acting credits, according to the Internet Movie Database. He further said that Stanton was a person who was loved by all in the entertainment industry and he earned all the reputation and respect on his own through his excellent and fone work. There's nobody like Harry Dean.

"Harry, I've got this part for you". Stanton's ex-cowboy Lucky is the core of the film, a lifelong smoker - not dissimilar to Stanton himself - who is shaken to pursue something greater after an accident.

A fixture in Hollywood circles, Harry was close friends with fellow actor Jack Nicholson and they even roomed together in the early 1960s in Los Angeles. Stanton is best known for his role as the polygamist leader in HBO's Big Love and as Andy's out-of-work father in Pretty in Pink. Stanton played a tortured man desperately struggling to deal with his past, and for much of the film he manages to speak volumes without saying a single word.
