Goyal has been given charge of the railway ministry to take forward reforms initiated by Suresh Prabhu towards corporatization of railways, monetization of the transporter's assets and boosting non-fare revenue to deliver tangible outcomes, analysts said. The move, that came amidst a spate of accidents putting the role of Prabhu in question, did not surprise anyone. With Piyush Goyal being a Mumbaikar, the citizens of the Maximum City, as well as the railway officials, are expecting better development of local trains here.

Pradhan's elevation was backed by the success of some of the key schemes of Modi's government - the "Give It Up" for LPG subsidies and the direct benefit transfer of the PAHAL scheme.

Later, Goyal held a meeting with the Railway Board Members.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi however had asked him to "wait".

He also said that he has got time to work under Prabhu. Goyal will continue to head the Coal Ministry along with Railways.

"I am here to help him in whatever he needs, and I believe that everyone will support him as they did me", Prabhu said.

"Goyalji is like my younger brother and now he will take over as new Railway Minister".

After receiving flak from all the sides for the successive rail derailments, Prabhu had offered to quit on August 23, taking moral responsibility for two train derailments in the span of four days.
