Options on N. Korea 'Effective, Overwhelming'

  • National security adviser H.R. McMaster right and U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley participate in a news briefing at the White House in Washington Friday Sept. 15 2017

Ahead of his remarks, both national security adviser H.R. McMaster and US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley stressed during a White House briefing on the United Nations General Assembly that Trump did have military options to stop North Korea.

"President Moon ordered [the military] to closely analyze and increase the readiness posture against new types of threats from North Korea, such as EMP [electromagnetic pulse] and biochemical threats", presidential spokesman Park Su-hyun said. "This includes the regime of North Korea, which has once again shown its utter contempt for its neighbors and for the entire world community".

North Korea is closer than ever to its goal of building a military arsenal that can viably target both USA troops in Asia and the American homeland. Now, however, with North Korea perilously close to being able to directly threaten USA cities with nuclear obliteration, the worry for some is that Pyongyang could blackmail Washington into qualifying or limiting its support for its allies in the region. "That takes us a little while, as we amass everything and analyse it", Mattis said. "There's no military solution here, they got us".

In addition to Trump and Haley, Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, the president's adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner, and his National Economic Council director, Gary Cohn, are all expected to attend events in NY next week. More specifically, China and Russian Federation want the U.S.to accept North Korea's demand to cease joint military exercises with South Korea to bring the Kim regime to the negotiating table.

Standing before a B-2 stealth bomber and a vast USA flag, Donald Trump on Friday lashed out at North Korea warned that advanced U.S. weaponry could make the souls of America's enemies "crumble".

BENNETT: But unlike past presidents, Trump is promoting his America-first agenda.

He called on all nations to do everything to address "this global problem short of war".

On Friday, the U.N. Security Council condemned North Korea's "highly provocative" test of an intermediate-range missile, which hurtled over USA ally Japan into the northern Pacific Ocean.

At the beginning of this year, North Korea's Kim announced plans to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile that could strike the US mainland.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Twitter, "North Korea's missile launch is another reckless breach of United Nations resolutions - a major threat to worldwide peace and security which demands a global response".

A top US national security official says President Donald Trump will work to build business ties between the USA and other nations during the United Nations General Assembly next week.

Previous administrations have pressed the U.N.to embrace change.

Trump's United Nations envoy called North Korea "reckless".
