  • Sen. Tim Scott to meet with Trump Wednesday to talk race, Charlottesville response

Scott said the Republican president ceded his "moral authority" after the race riot when he claimed that their were "fine people on both sides" of the clash at a white nationalist rally that left one protester dead.

"He was very receptive, he tried to explain what he intended", Scott said at an interview with a group of reporters in his office later Wednesday, when USA TODAY asked how the president took his criticism of the response.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters during Wednesday's briefing that the president's meeting with Scott was "very productive".

Senate members quickly passed the legislation and the House voted to pass the bill soon after.

As ESPN condemns on of its stars for calling President Trump a white supremacist, Congress has decided to make the president legally state that he does not endorse white supremacy. You have some pretty bad dudes on the other side also, and essentially that's what I said.

"He shook his head and said, 'Yeah, I got it, ' " recalled the Charleston Republican. 'It has been going on for a long time in our country - not Donald Trump, not Barack Obama.

The White House issued a statement following the meeting, which included Vice President Mike Pence and other aides, that avoided mentioning Charlottesville or the President's contentious comments.

"My comment on his compromised moral authority was based on America's reaction" to his rhetoric after the violence in Virginia, said Scott, the Senate's only black Republican.

"There's a deep divide between the black community and law enforcement, a trust gap", Scott said in that speech.

In an unusual move, the sponsors exercised a mechanism that requires the president's signature on the resolution even though it is nonbinding and written to reflect the sense of Congress.

Scott has made no secret of his desire for the President to become more engaged on this topic. Tim Scott to discuss race relations in wake of the incidents in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Details about their conversation were not discussed publicly, however Sanders said it was "certainly a conversation that Sen". And on Tuesday, Jemele Hill, an ESPN host, denounced the president to her 600,000 Twitter followers, describing Trump as "a white supremacist who has largely surrounded himself w/ other white supremacists".

Trump has been criticised for his response to the violence and rally, in which he asserted there were good people on "both sides" and bemoaned rising efforts to remove Confederate monuments as an attack on United States "history and culture".

When asked about the comment on Wednesday, Sanders called the tweet "a fireable offense".
