Rohingya Muslims massacre: Aung San Suu Kyi should not be silent

  • Exodus of Rohingya to Bangladesh tops quarter of a million: UNHCR

For much of her career, Aung San Suu Kyi has been less a real person than the character in a film script - one with the crudely redemptive arc of a Hollywood blockbuster.

"It is vital that aid agencies working in Cox's Bazar have the resources they need to provide emergency assistance to incredibly vulnerable people who have been forced to flee their homes and have arrived in Bangladesh with nothing", the United Nations resident coordinator in Bangladesh Robert Watkins said.

Some have called for the Nobel Peace Prize she won in 1991 as a champion of democracy to be revoked.

"Aung San Suu Kyi knows things and I'm very happy".

The 85-year-old also warned that the outcome of her ignorance to the massacre was "too steep".

Myanmar's powerful military, the Tatmadaw, would continue to hold a quarter of all seats in parliament, with the generals retaining control of key ministries including home affairs, defense and borders.

The United Nations has declared Rohingyas as "the most persecuted minority in the world".

Unlike him, most critics have shortsighted views without seeing the bigger picture, which is that the government and the military need to have good relations for the long-term benefit of the country. Since the democratic transition began, Western journalists increasingly needled her on the Rohingya issue, and Suu Kyi began to flash annoyance in interviews. Indeed, support remains consistent throughout Myanmar, political analyst Yan Myo Thein told Al Jazeera. "She's saying, 'I'm not a human rights activist".

The first development is the petition that was forwarded to the Nobel authorities in Norway, pleading for the revocation of her Peace prize as the 386,000 petitioners believe that the Nobel peace laureate is "complicit in crimes against humanity".

Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi is coming under more pressure by the worldwide community to end the violence against the minority Rohingya Muslims.

"The global community and Muslim countries expect the government of Myanmar to put an immediate end to the ongoing violence against Rohingya Muslim community and allow unhindered access of humanitarian assistance to the violence-stricken regions", Zarif said.

The Rohingya have always been subjected to discrimination in the Buddhist-majority country.

The Myanmar military undertook the current "clearance operations" after Rohingya militants attacked government forces on August 25, killing and injuring many among them.

Their fans were louder than ours. "It's one of the bigger ones in the year for us, but you can't treat it any differently". The two veteran quarterbacks have combined for 60 victories, more than 20,000 yards of total offense and 211 touchdowns.

Congressional leaders from both parties are adding their voices to the worldwide condemnation of the violence in western Myanmar that has sent an estimated 164,000 Rohingya Muslims fleeing to Bangladesh and led to growing doubts about Suu Kyi's leadership. They use "the combination of human rights violations, and deliberate impoverishment, to force Rohingyas to leave".

Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Dhaka on Friday to protest against the killing of Rohingya Muslims in neighbouring Myanmar.

"It is sad that the followers of Buddha, who practice non-violence, are torturing the Rohingya".

"In 2012, people relied a lot on the newspapers for everything, but now is a very unusual time and people don't have trust, not even in the newspapers". But the native population never considered them as their own.

"Elsewhere, DFID's partners are ready to provide emergency food to 30,000 people and to treat more than 3,000 severely malnourished children and pregnant women, but can not get the access they need".

The region has witnessed tension between its Buddhist and Muslim populations since communal violence broke out in 2012. There was a nationalist feeling too which worked against them.

For the Burmese in Yangon, almost 700km away from Rakhine, the problem is also one of reliable information as local media is seen by many as peddling their own agendas, while a majority of the population is now taking to notoriously untrustworthy social media accounts to find information.

There are about 1 million Rohingya Muslims in Burma and they have for several years complained of being victims of persecution from the state.

Earlier this week Suu Kyi, 72, condemned a "huge iceberg of misinformation" on the crisis, without mentioning the Rohingya flocking to Bangladesh.

Iranian worshipers have staged rallies in Tehran and many other cities to express their outrage at the ongoing brutal violence against the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

"I think she should speak up on the [Rohingya] issue and not be shy", said Aung Zaw, editor and founder of The Irrawaddy newspaper.

Patel called for "immediate and full humanitarian access and support" for the people and communities affected, and alleged that her department and partners were unable to get the access they needed to reach the victims.

This arrangement has turned the ongoing Rohingya crisis into a tightrope walk.
