Tropical Storm Jose quickly strengthened to become a Category 1 hurricane on Wednesday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Katia, a Category 1 hurricane as of Wednesday evening, is in the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to make landfall in Mexico late Friday or early Saturday. The Mexican state of Veracruz has a hurricane watch in effect and the storm is now about 185 miles North-Northwest of Veracruz.

Earlier in the day, Katia was slightly nearer to the Mexican coast, and at about 10 p.m. CDT (0300 GMT) was moving east-southeast at around 2 miles per hour (4 kph), the center said.

Jose could hit some of the same small islands in the northern Lesser Antilles decimated by Irma.

In Barbuda, an island east of Puerto Rico, winds ripped off the roof of a police station, forcing officers to take shelter in a nearby fire station, The Associated Press reported on Wednesday.

Having three hurricanes active at the same time in the Atlantic Basin is rather rare. It was shortly followed by a sixth, Hurricane Katia, which now hovers around the Southern Gulf of Mexico. "We can expect additional evacuations as this storm continues to come near our state".

Earlier, he posted video on Facebook showing wind and pounding rain whipping the shoreline as Irma's core approached. Katia is a Category 1, and is expected to make landfall late Friday.

According to reports, Irma's winds are stronger than if you were to add up all of the winds of the previous eight Atlantic storms together at maximum intensity.

In addition to the mix of three hurricanes, the HWN has been hassled by a series of solar flares - one a massive Class X-9.3, said to be the most powerful flare in more than a decade. It said winds would likely fluctuate slightly, but the storm would remain at Category 4 or 5 strength for the next day or two.
