  • ESPN Suspends Jemele Hill After Tweet Urging Boycott of NFL Advertisers

At no point in Hill's posts does she call for an advertiser boycott. In the aftermath, all employees were reminded of how individual tweets may reflect negatively on ESPN and that such action would have consequences. That came two weeks after the NFL declared it stood behind its players and projected a message of unity in the wake of President Donald Trump calling any player who protested during the national anthem a "son of a bitch".

ESPN announced Monday it had suspended Jemele Hill for two weeks after she violated the company's "social media guidelines" for a second time.

After Hill's tweets about the president, ESPN released a statement that read: "The comments on Twitter from Jemele Hill regarding the President do not represent the position of ESPN".

ESPN has suspended Jemele Hill over her social media usage.

ESPN may have suspended her under the belief that she was supporting an National Football League advertiser boycott, which raises questions about the network's loyalties when it comes to business partners and internal employees.

Don't misunderstand, Hill being suspended is a good thing. Suspending her opens up the news outlet to criticisms over its journalistic practices and priorities.

Hill tweeted: 'This play always work.

According to Tony Maglio of TheWrap, Hill's co-anchor, Michael Smith, reached a "mutual" agreement with the network that will see him miss the 6 p.m. ET edition of SportsCenter. Then, ESPN excused her for it without punishment because Trump had made people "upset". "If I didn't, I wouldn't want it to be better".
