  • The damaged windows on the 32nd floor room that was used by the shooter in the Mandalay Hotel and the Route 91 festival venue after a gunman killed more than 58 people and wounded more than 500 others when he opened fire on a country music festiva

Stephen Paddock, 64-year-old wealthy former accountant and high-stakes gambler has been identified by police as the man behind the deadliest mass shooting in modern USA history when he opened fire from the Mandalay By Hotel and Casino on October 1, killing 58 people and injuring almost 500 others, before turning the gun on himself as police closed in. Many are traumatized and mourning the loss of a co- worker, 21-year-old Erick Silva, who was among the 58 people killed.

"This individual purposely hid his actions leading up to this event and it is hard for us to find the answers to those actions", Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo said.

"As you might imagine, Mr Campos was not only injured when he was sacked upon as he [checked on] the door alarm down the hall. he was also extremely shaken up about what had happened to him", Lombardo said.

Speaking on Monday, Lombardo said Campos was shot at 9:59 p.m., six minutes before the gunman began raining bullets on the country music festival.

Authorities said last week that security guard Jesus Campos had approached Paddock's room as the shooting was underway, diverting the gunman's attention.

But on Monday, the timeline changed.

A federal official said authorities are looking into the possibility Paddock planned additional attacks, including a vehicle bombing.

Paddock had stockpiled 23 guns, a dozen of them modified to fire continuously like an automatic weapon, inside his room on the 32nd-floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel, where he smashed two windows before opening fire on the crowd.

"We still do not have a clear motive or reason", a frustrated Clark County Undersheriff Kevin McMahill said on Friday.

Andrew McCabe, the deputy director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, conceded on Wednesday the case was "somewhat different than numerous ones we've dealt with in the past". McMahill noted that in past mass killings or terrorist attacks, killers left notes, social media postings and information on a computer, or even phoned police.

The small group of people who knew Paddock well said the one-time IRS agent and son of a notorious bank robber did essentially nothing except gamble, sleep and travel between casinos.

But Paddock may have been scouting other locations, including the Life is lovely music festival, which was held in Las Vegas the weekend before Sunday's attack.

A US official says investigators believe the Las Vegas shooter may have hired a prostitute in the days before the shooting, and they are interviewing other call girls as they look for clues into his motive.

The note's details, first reported by "60 Minutes", were revealed by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Officer Dave Newton, who said he spotted it resting by Paddock's "shooting platform".

He then turned his gun on the 22,000 revelers at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival five minutes later, per the original timeline of 10:05pm, Lombardo said. "So he had that written down and figured out so he would know where to shoot to hit his targets from there". Authorities didn't find a note in his room, only a paper with numbers, he said.

They know he had a plan to survive the shooting and try to escape, though would not say how.

"That's been a matter of discussion, whether what I said was accurate or not".

Investigators are trying to trace that money.

"I took my boots off", he said.

Police have questioned Paddock's girlfriend, Marilou Danley, who has co-operated with police since she returned home from the Philippines earlier this week. By the time officers entered the room, Paddock was dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"The elevation he was on, the drop of what his bullet was gonna be for the crowd".

Bitsko said the level of preparation and work inside, including setting up wires for the cameras, suggested that it took Paddock "days to finish" getting it all ready.

But he wanted to help as many people as possible, he said.
