  • NYT: O'Reilly Struck $32M Settlement In January Over Harassment Allegations

O'Reilly, host of The O'Reilly Factor, was ousted from the news channel in April amid reports he'd settled multiple suits to the tune of $13 million.

Bill O'Reilly attends the Hollywood Reporter's 2016 35 Most Powerful People in Media at Four Seasons Restaurant on April 6, 2016 in New York City. But he said he agreed to settle "to protect my children from the horror" of continuing adverse publicity had Wiehl's allegations been litigated in court.

The huge January settlement, which, according to the Times was due to "allegations of repeated harassment, a nonconsensual sexual relationship and the sending of gay pornography and other sexually explicit material to her", amounted to at least three times the previously known largest settlement.

The Times' reported Fox executives knew of the settlement, but not the details, and made a calculated business decision to renew O'Reilly's contract, which came after Megyn Kelly departed the network, as part of an effort to revitalize the network after it was rocked by the Roger Ailes scandal.

In its first article about Mr. O'Reilly on April 1, The New York Times printed inaccurate settlement figures while fully understanding that O'Reilly and his counsel are legally bound by confidentiality and can not set the record straight.

"His new contract, which was made at a time typical for renewals of multi-year talent contracts, added protections for the company specifically aimed at harassment, including that O'Reilly could be dismissed if the company was made aware of other allegations or if additional relevant information was obtained in a company investigation". Fox re-signed O'Reilly earlier this year, he wrote, "after the company had analyzed and considered all the allegations against him".

The former TV host's reps have not responded with a comment yet, but we have one: shame on you, Bill.

This latest episode to hit Fox comes after Gretchen Carlson, a former high-profile Fox presenter, received $20 million from her employers after she claimed former chairman Roger Ailes harassed her.

In spite of the fact that the arrangement has not been already made open, the system's parent organization, 21st Century Fox, recognizes that it knew about the lady's objections about Mr. O'Reilly.

The Times reached out to O'Reilly himself for comment, and he was predictably combative, telling the interviewer, "This is frightful, it's disgusting what I went through, awful what my family went through".

Wiehl last appeared on O'Reilly's show on December 20, 2016.

Wiehl also said in the affidavit, "We have since resolved all of our issues" and that she would "no longer make the allegations" contained in a draft complaint against O'Reilly that she had drawn up months before.

21st Century Fox said Saturday that it had taken "concerted action" to overhaul Fox News and replace members of the network's leadership.
