Players, owners, and National Football League executives will meet next week to discuss the controversy, the National Football League said in a joint statement, adding that meeting will focus on "how to make progress on the important social issues that players have vocalized".

Since then, Matthews has remained in the locker room during the national anthem.

Titans coach Mike Mularkey said he could not comment because he learned of Matthews' tweet after practice and had not talked to the player yet.

Matthews recently posted a picture of himself saluting on Instagram with a picture of his deceased brother superimposed over his likeness.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee Titans wide receiver Rishard Matthews appears to be absolute in his decision to stay inside during the national anthem, saying he is willing to give up his profession rather than being forced to change his protest over social issues. His protest was launched shortly after President Donald Trump's attacks toward National Football League players who choose to protest. However, that changed after Trump referred to protesting players as 'sons of b******' during a speech in Alabama back in September.

However, Matthews' father reportedly served in the Marines for 23 years, and his brother was actually killed in Afghanistan while working as a private defense contractor in 2015 after previously serving in Iraq.

"I'm exhausted of hearing, 'Stick to sports.' It comes down to right and wrong in this world", Matthews told ESPN last month. "Because when you do that you're kind of saluting the military, I think". "That was an ignorant thing that I tweeted out at that given moment". As minorities, what do you want to happen before we say anything?

President Donald Trump, who has been a vocal critic of the protests, praised Goodell's statement in a tweet. "We need to move past this controversy, and we want to do that together with our players".
