Describing the violence in Myanmar's Rakhine state as "ethnic cleansing", Haque said the worldwide community has been made aware of how the country was "snatching the rights" of the Rohingya.

A small United Nations team visited the crisis-wracked region in majority Buddhist Myanmar in recent days and described witnessing "unimaginable" suffering.

Haque, who arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday, has met Indian officials to deal with the Rohingya crisis, with which Dhaka is grappling because of the arrival of refugees.

Rights groups say more than half of more than 400 Rohingya villages in the north of Rakhine State have been torched in a campaign by the security forces and Buddhist vigilantes to drive out Muslims, Reuters reported.

He further said the United Nations had "substantial capacity" in Myanmar, which can be swiftly deployed to northern Rakhine once clearance is granted by local authorities.

The stress on Bangladesh has been increasing as the inflow of refugees continues even after nearly more than 40 days after the first instance of violence on 25 August.

On whether there has been radicalisation among Rohingya in Bangladesh, Haque said he has been to refugee camps several times in the last few weeks but "there has not been any sign of radicalisation in these people".

Charities have warned of a food crisis across the border and say 281,000 people desperately need food, including 145,000 children under five.

The attacks prompted a vicious response by Myanmar's authorities, resulting in clashes and death of hundreds of Rohingya, while hundreds of thousands have fled the conflict area.

An EU delegation also joined the UN's whistle-stop trip to Rakhine, which took in Maungdaw and Rathedaung areas, explaining in a statement "this was not an investigation mission and could not be in the circumstances".

Local officials in Rakhine said Monday's tour includes meetings with relatives of victims allegedly killed by Muslim militants during the violence against Mro and Daignets minority Hindu communities in Maungdaw township.

Haque further said that Bangladesh has given Myanmar a written proposal on how to take back the Rohingyas and in this regard, a working group consisting of representatives of both countries has been set up.
