  • US Move to Blacklist IRGC Terrorism: Tehran

The expected shift in policy has united Iran's conservative Principalist faction and the liberal "Reformists" who form the main support base of President Hassan Rouhani.

President Hassan Rouhani of Iran on Wednesday warned that the United States would be the loser if President Donald Trump decides to drop Iran's worldwide nuclear deal.

Iran said on Tuesday the United States would be "joining the terrorists' camp" if it chose to declare its Islamic Revolution Guards Corps a terrorist organization.

Iranian officials vowed last week to strike US forces and bases in the region if the Trump administration moves forward with extending a terror designation to the IRGC.

The measures by US President Donald Trump will fuel the disarray within the country, Rouhani said, adding that if Washington decides to withdraw from the nuclear deal, it will become more apparent to the (US) people that it is a big loss for them.

The Iranian foreign minister warned that in case of such a move, the USA would become more isolated and despicable among the Iranian people.

His announcement would stop short of pulling out of the agreement, but give the US Congress 60 days to decide whether to reimpose sanctions. "It is time to teach them a new lesson".

Trump has long criticized the Iranian nuclear pact. "We have all options on the table".

He said: "If the news is correct about the stupidity of the American government in considering the Revolutionary Guards a terrorist group, then the Revolutionary Guards will consider the American Army to be like ISIS all around the world, particularly in the Middle East".

The Iranian nuclear deal, backed by European countries, China and Russian Federation, lifted broad worldwide sanctions over Iran's nuclear program that had been tightened during the Obama years and had caused severe damage to Iran's economy.

The US has a complicated relationship with Iran's Revolutionary Guards, which is accused of supporting groups like Hamas and Hezbollah while also helping the US fight the Islamic State in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Atlantic reports.

Remaining committed to the deal is tantamount to saving their own face, the Iranian president said.

Iran's rial has dropped against the USA dollar in recent days in a sign of concern about Trump's policy.

Jafari went on to add that Zarif's comments on Iran's position include defensive and security aspects as well, however our discourses and manner of speech are different.
