VP Pence to Hold National Space Council Meeting in Virginia

  • Vice President Mike Pence addressed NASA employees in July

It will be chaired by Vice President Mike Pence and include participation by acting NASA Administrator Robert Lightfoot, as well as a number of Trump Administration cabinet members and senior officials, and aerospace industry leaders. In recent years NASA has talked about sending humans to a space station near the Moon but not landing astronauts there.

Here's what Vice President Mike Pence is saying: "We will return American astronauts to the moon, not only to leave behind footprints and flags, but to build the foundations we need to send Americans to Mars and beyond".

President Donald Trump revived the NSC and Pence will oversee the council's first meeting in 25 years when it convenes Thursday.

'Rather than competing with other nations to create the best space technology, the previous administration chose capitulation, ' Pence said, in a direct jab at Barack Obama.

The meeting's opening remarks focused on moving away from the current outsourcing of manned launches, in which American astronauts go to space on Russian rockets.

It's a return to the vision of President George W. Bush, which was deferred when President Obama reoriented the space agency toward a journey to Mars.

After talking about how "we will blaze new trails into that great frontier" Pence turned the discussion to the dangers of space and how much of the USA intelligence system and day-to-day life are dependent on commercial satellites operating safely.

The council consists of professionals from various sectors of the space industry, including the Civil Commercial and National Security Sector.

Two of the three panels consisted of executives of the spaceflight companies SpaceX, Blue Origin, Sierra Nevada Corp., Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Orbital ATK. "We can only decide to match and raise our adversaries who are already weaponizing space", former NASA chief Michael Griffin said.

"We have proven that USA ventures in space lead to broad societal benefits that lift our national economy", said Hewson. 'But now we start again'.

"America seems have lost our edge in space", Pence said. "And, as we learned 60 years ago, when we drift, we fall behind". Pence also explained how desperately the US needs technology of its own in space, to protect its surveillance, communication, and navigation systems from hacking attempts.
