Amazon's highly anticipated mixed-reality building service has officially been announced: Amazon Sumerian will allow enterprising entrepreneurs everywhere the ability to quickly build and host VR, AR or 3D apps online.

On Monday, Amazon launched the service, Amazon Sumerian, to ease the development of augmented reality and virtual reality apps for different platforms.

Sumerian doesn't require any extensive 3D graphics expertise, and can be used by a broader group of professionals to create valuable experiences.

Sumerian will run in any browser that supports WebGL or WebVR graphics rendering including Daydream, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and iOS mobile devices.

The public cloud computing giant took the wraps off its new Amazon Sumerian service, which provides a platform for developers to create realistic virtual environments that can be populated with animated characters and other 3D objects. Developers can also use the platform to create their own objects and scenes.

This PS4 Slim price-crash over at Amazon is unmissable for gamers
You're going to want to get the largest memory card you can afford for your Nintendo Switch, so we've got the best deals around. But stock is selling out fast, especially at John Lewis, where all but two Nintendo Switch gaming offers are still available.

This news comes as one of the first announcements out of AWS re:Invent, the cloud provider's major conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Built on Amazon Web Services, the toolkit is meant to help with building experiences like "training simulations, virtual concierge services, enhanced online shopping experiences, [and] virtual house or land tours".

On top of this, developers get access to a set of "hosts" - 3D characters that they can customize to interact with an end user. If you find what you're looking for, you can view it in 3D and download it to use in your app.

"Customers across industries see the potential of VR and AR technologies for a wide range of uses-from educating and training employees to creating new customer experiences". Amazon says that before Sumerian arrived, building this sort of content required special skills in tools for 3D modeling, environmental design, animation, lighting effects, and audio editing.

Amazon is also offering the integration of Sumerian with the artificial intelligence infrastructures, Amazon Lex and Amazon Polly, for automatic speech recognition, language understanding and text-to-speech capability applications. Amazon believes that Sumerian would be a positive catalyst for developers and platform owners in achieving this.
