American running great and 2009 NY victor Meb Keflezighi completed his 26th and final marathon, collapsing as he crossed the finish.

Shalane Flanagan has become the first American woman to win the popular annual marathon in the past 40 years. A pack of nine competitors consistently jockeyed with Keitany for the lead, including three runners making their NY debut: Kenya's Betsy Saina; Ethiopia's Mamitu Daska; and Sara Dossena, an Italian triathlete.

With tears in her eyes, pointing and shouting (with maybe a few colorful words thrown in), Flanagan won the race with a time of 2 hours 26 minutes 53 seconds.

In the men's race, Geoffrey Kamworwor of Kenya took first, his unofficial time clocking in at 2:10:53.

Flanagan is a 16-time national champion across various distances and finished third in the 10,000 meters at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The marathon was run against the backdrop of heightened security after a terrorist attack earlier in the week killed eight people on a bike path in the city.

More than 50,000 runners participated across the different groups.

Flanagan previously finished second in the 2010 NYC Marathon.

Flanagan placed sixth in the women's marathon in at the Rio Olympics previous year, the top American finish.

Flanagan's win shut down a record-breaking moment for the women's race runner-up, Mary Keitany. Flanagan covered the 23rd mile in 5:11, and the 24th mile in 5:04 to build a 28-second lead over Keitany with one mile to go.

The wheelchair division was a sweep for Swiss athletes, with Manuela Schar and Marcel Eric Hug winning. He settled for second in 2015 to Kenyan Stanley Biwott after being overtaken late in the race.
