Doctor Who: Tom Baker Returns to Complete 1979 Episode

  • Doctor Who star Tom Baker is back as the Time Lord

My real life was really rather drab compared with the life of Doctor Who when we were making it. "Doctor Who for me was an asylum and when I was in (it), in full flight, making silly suggestions or pulling amusing faces to make actors laugh, then I was happy". In an effort to find the hidden world, he calls upon a Time Lord-masquerading on Earth as Professor Chronotis at St. Cedd's College in Cambridge-who, in turn, call on his old friend and protege, the Doctor.

The story was cut short by a strike at the BBC, but over seven hours had already been filmed.

Baker, 83, last appeared as the Time Lord in 1981, after which, the character regenerated and Peter Davison took over as the next Doctor.

Tom Baker is returning to Doctor Who to finish a lost episode of the show from 38 years ago. The episode had to be shelved due to an industrial strike at the BBC.

Doctor Who "Shada" is available on digital download in the United Kingdom from today and arrives on DVD and Blu-Ray on December 4th.

The producers have made use 1970s camera equipment and shot the scenes on the original TARDIS set and K9 robot dog model in order to make it look exactly like the original footage.

The newly finished storyline is now available as a digital download and will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on Monday, December 4.

It's exciting to see BBC give makeovers to lost or unfinished episodes of Doctor Who, which still unfortunately boasts huge gaps in the runs of the Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton).

It will be his first return as the Time Lord since a brief cameo for Children in Need.

"When I was doing Doctor Who it was the realization of all my childhood fantasies", Baker told The Guardian (video above). "Doctor Who was more important than life to me - I used to dread the end of rehearsal...."
