  • In the hack 57 million Uber customers and drivers details were compromised

With the announcement, San Francisco-based Uber said it concealed the breach for a year after paying $100,000 in ransom for the stolen information to be destroyed.

Uber failed to disclose a massive breach past year, which disclosed the data of some 57 million users, the company's new chief executive officer said last week, according to Reuters.

Chicago Corporation Counsel Ed Siskel, who filed the complaint in conjunction with Foxx, said that companies should not be permitted to violate the law by "failing to safeguard personal information and then covering it up, preventing those impacted from taking steps to protect themselves", the station reported.

A spokesman for Uber told the BBC the firm is not able to clarify how many United Kingdom drivers are included in the 2.7 million.

Uber recently landed in trouble because 57 million of its users had been hacked, and the company spent a bunch of money to deliberately hide that fact from the rest of the world.

According to a statement from Hancock, the Information Commissioner's Office have asked Uber to provide them with technical reports that will be passed onto law enforcement, and ensure that what Uber has said is accurate. "There is no excuse for keeping this information from consumers".

Had the incident taken place after the introduction of the EU's General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) next May, the penalties could have been more severe.

"We are monitoring the affected accounts and have flagged them for additional fraud protection", the company said.

The lawsuit names an Alberta woman affected by the breach as the plaintiff and seeks to have the class action certified to apply to a broader group of individuals.

The letter also notes that Uber entered into a consent order with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in August 2017 in response to the company's privacy and data security standards.

In a statement Tuesday, Uber said it takes the matter seriously and is cooperating with regulators. The trial, brought by Alphabet-owned Waymo, centres on allegations that Uber stole autonomous vehicle technology trade secrets from it.
