  • ATP FINALS- Goffin to meet Dimitrov for an unprecedented season decider

Sock now stands between Dimitrov and a place in the final but, with Dominic Thiem the only player to win more than two games against the world number six so far in the tournament, the American will need to produce his best to knock him out.

Growing in confidence the 26-year-old Goffin broke Federer's serve again at 1-1 in the third set as the Swiss, suddenly anxious and struggling for timing, struck a backhand out.

"Next year I think is going to be obviously pretty interesting, especially the beginning of it", he said. "And right now those are the moments that I rise up to". "Then the semi-final, to beat Roger for the first time here in such a big event, big tournament, it was the flawless moment", Goffin, who beat a hobbling Nadal on Monday, said. "Unbelievable effort. I'm very proud to play against him in the final".

Roger Federer said earlier in the tournament that "Baby Fed" Dimitrov has become more comfortable in his own skin and calmer about his place in the men's game this year. He opened the second set with fight; holding another impressive service game before breaking Federer and then holding his second service game to love. But Goffin broke serve with a forehand victor in the second game of the second set and consolidated his advantage to take the match into a decider. He'd had to change things up after their round-robin encounter, but his fearless all-or-nothing approach wasn't enough against the DImitrov defence, and a late mini-revival failed to save the match.

After an hour-long opening set, the two players matched each other in the second until the Belgian broke for 4-3 having survived a break point in the previous game.

"I think I've had good results in the past, but now I need to be even more consistent on those kind of events and in the same time raise up my level on occasions like this".

Dimitrov served his way to 40-15 but saw another chance drift away, before Goffin finally netted a backhand volley to end the match.

"It was the only game I didn't serve well".

The sixth seed started where he left off by making a blistering start, winning the first three games. In the second, I had some opportunities to come back, to break back, but he was really solid.

"I don't want to get too hyped up because I've done well, now I'm No. 3 in the world", Dimitrov said.

Dimitrov's run to the semi-finals at the All England Club meant he cracked the top 10 for the first time.

"Of course, one of my main goals is to win a tournament, a grand slam tournament", Dimitrov said.
