  • World's first human head transplant successfully carried out

Surgeon Sergio Canavero, Director of the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group, has become famous for claiming to be working on the first human head transplant. Canavero and Ren have played up reported successes in performing mice, monkey, and even rat head transplant operations.

In 2015 Professor Canavero, former director of the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group, announced that he meant to transplant the head of a paralysed man onto the body of a dead donor. In a statement to The Telegraph, professor Sergio Canavero claimed that the electrical stimulation of the nerves highlighted that the operation on the corpse had been successful.

Canavero did not present any evidence of the claims, though he promised that a scientific paper with details would be released in the "next few day", Newsweek reports.

Whilst Professor Catherina Becker, from the University of Edinburgh pointed out that the head controlling motor function can not be assessed in a corpse - meaning there is no way of knowing whether it would occur in a living human who undergoes the transplant. A full head swap between brain dead organ donors is the next stage.

He also pointed out that a human head transplant surgery can be carried out in 18 hours, the timeframe his team has set for itself.

But not everyone is convinced Professor Canavero could actually ever achieve a successful head transplant.

Several dozen surgeons will work with Canavero as he will simultaneously sever the spinal chords of the donor (body) and recipient (head) with a diamond blade, in what is expected to be a 24-hour procedure.

A Russian man identified as Valery Spiridinov has reportedly registered with him for a head transplant.

"The first human transplant on human cadavers has been done", he said. Everyone said it was impossible.

Professor Canavero claimed that the procedure took place in China because "the Americans did not understand" and wouldn't fund the experiments, according to USA Today.

But the medical community has looked at the surgery and the spectacle surrounding it with horror.
