Google Search and Maps to add wait time info for restaurants

  • Google Will Now Tell You How Long the Wait Is at Your Favorite Restaurant

Planning an impromptu trip to nearby restaurant as a special treat, but also anxious that you'll have to wait hours for your food to arrive?

People can also check to see wait times for other days in the week. You might love Gmail, but you have to suffer through targeted ads; you may enjoy using Google Maps, but you have to give up your location privacy.

Coming soon, Google Search and Google Maps will show estimated wait times for almost a million sit-down restaurants across the world, the company announced today. It will then come to Google Maps to Android, at which point it will expand to include grocery stores, the company says. Technically, it's an add-on to a preexisting feature - the Popular Times tool that shows the busiest hours at businesses - but this tweak lets users plan better for dinner, since an excessive table wait definitely disrupts the day more than standing in an unusually long Uniqlo line.

As detailed on the Google Blog, the wait times your see aren't going to be exact.

Users will find that directly below the graphed data showing popular times, Google will now show estimated wait times if you were to walk in the door at that very moment.

Search for a restaurant using Google, and you're already told the times of day at which a particular place is busiest. Yes, it's an opt-in feature, and yes, you've probably opted-in, because it makes Maps and Search a lot more useful.
