  • Kenyan opposition supporters are sprayed with water in Nairobi Kenya Friday Nov.17 2017. One person has been killed in confrontations between Kenyan police and supporters of opposition leader Raila Odinga as tensions over the disputed presidential ele

Odinga, leader of the National Super Alliance (NASA), said in a statement that authorities had also used "armed militia and live bullets" to disperse supporters, which led to the "killing [of] several and maiming [of] many".

"The indiscriminate use of live ammunition is totally unacceptable". Images aired live on television also showed groups of youths throwing stones at officers.

The deaths occurred as police and protesters fought with rocks, water cannons and tear gas on one of the main roads leading to the business district.

"This (police response) is a sign of a crumbling regime", Raila said.

The hashtag #RailaReturns trended on Twitter Friday morning. The leaders were accompanied by a crowd that was chanting anti-Jubilee slogans.

Earlier this week, Nairobi police warned that they would not allow a rally to welcome Odinga back from his speaking engagements in the United States and Britain. The vote saw Kenyatta win a second, five-year term with 98 percent of the vote that saw only 39 percent of voters take part after Odinga boycotted it.

The claims came after windscreen of Raila's vehicle was hit as police used teargas canisters to scatter opposition supporters in Nairobi on Friday.

His closest rival Odinga did not contest the repeat vote on October 26 saying he doubted if it would be free and fair even as Kenya's Supreme Court has until November 14 to rule on election petitions and if it upholds the result, Kenyatta will be sworn in on November 28.
