  • Uber Sued by Two Women Who Say They Were Sexually Assaulted by Drivers

The women, who are remaining anonymous, argue that due to an alleged lack of proper, thorough screenings by workers, certain customers of the service have been "subject to rape, sexual assault or gender-motivated violence or harassment by their Uber driver in the last four years".

Uber said that it was reviewing the court complaint and that the allegations were important to them and are taken seriously. Abdallah was arrested that month and charged with two counts of sexual battery, according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit also argues that the ride-sharing company misrepresents the safety of being an Uber passenger in general.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of all USA riders who were "subject to rape, sexual assault, or gender-motivated violence or harassment by their Uber driver in the last four years".

Over the last seven years, Uber has done everything possible to continue using low-priced, woefully inadequate background checks on drivers and has failed to monitor drivers for any violent or inappropriate conduct after they are hired. Jane Doe 1 claims that a Uber driver in Miami who had previously been charged with a felony carried her to her bed upon driving her home. The two women want the company to change the screening methods for drivers among other practices.

"Uber has created a system for bad actors to gain access to vulnerable victims", the lawsuit states. The plaintiffs insisted that these issues are affecting legitimate drivers, not the "rogue" ones. Uber has attempted to publicly boost its reputation through a recent donation to sexual assault and domestic violence prevention programs.

"A litany of incidents regarding sexual assaults, and physical assaults, by Uber drivers on passengers, shows a pattern of similarly heinous, but avoidable attacks", the lawsuit states.

The other plaintiff, a Los Angeles resident, was also intoxicated when she booked an Uber ride to take her home from a restaurant in January 2017. They include ways in which Uber can better screen its drivers, such as with in-person interviews, character checks, routine criminal background checks and fingerprint background checks.

Uber on the other hand is not required to meet that standard since it is not required to be licensed as a private transportation carrier, claims the complaint.
