  • Exclusive: Michael Emenalo quits Chelsea in major blow to Roman Abramovich

Roman Abramovich is understood to have fought hard to keep a man who first joined the club in 2007 as assistant first team and rose through the system to become technical director in 2011.

He presided over the signings of key players such as Eden Hazard, Cesar Azpilicueta, Thibaut Courtois and N'Golo Kante, as well as a Chelsea academy that has emerged as a dominant force in English and European youth football.

Chelsea chairperson Bruce Buck praised Emenalo's work.

Emenalo was heavily involved with the club's scouting department, and a largely barren summer saw them miss out on a number of Conte's first-choice signings.

'Sources have suggested that Emenalo does not wish to engage in a three-way power battle with Conte and Granovskaia who are known not to see eye to eye'.

"Chelsea Football Club today announces that technical director Michael Emenalo has chose to stand down from his role", the club said in a statement.

Emenalo said it had been a hard decision to make, adding: "I have had the privilege to work alongside some of the most talented people in the world of sport over the past 10 years and I will depart incredibly proud of the achievements we have made".

The move may be viewed in some quarters as a victory for Conte, but Emenalo has remained supportive of the Italian who he helped to appoint previous year.

"I have had the privilege to work alongside some of the most talented people in the world of sport over the past 10 years, and I will depart incredibly proud of the achievements we have made".

Chelsea's off-field intrigue continued yesterday when Conte dropped central defender David Luiz from the squad to play Manchester United, which lead to Sky Sports' Gary Neville claiming that the Chelsea boss could 'lose his job' over the incident.

Conte, on the other hand, had this to say about the situation: "I am very sorry to see Michael leave Chelsea, and I would like to thank him for all his help and support since I arrived at this club".
