Militants attacked a crowded mosque during Friday prayers in the Sinai Peninsula, killing at least 200 people in the deadliest ever attack on Egyptian civilians by Islamic extremists.

State media showed images of bloodied victims and bodies covered in blankets inside the Al Rawdah mosque in Bir al-Abed, west of El Arish, the main city in North Sinai.

An attack on a mosque in Egypt has left dozens dead and at least 75 injured.

Al-Sisi said that the Friday's attack aimed to spread a seed of doubt among Egyptians about the capacity of the state, but affirmed that the armed forces and police will be responding to restore security in north Sinai.

Meanwhile, Vice President Mike Pence offered his condolences to victims of the attack, many of whom are followers of Sufism, a mystical branch of Sunni Islam that many jihadist groups view as heretical.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May and French President Emmanuel Macron also gave their condolences on Twitter, while NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said his thoughts were with all those affected.
